WHAT HAPPENS DURING PHASE II ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Many Colorado Springs orthodontists will tell you that the perfect time for a child to start thinking about braces is around the age of seven.  When children start their orthodontic treatment early, it's known as Phase I.  However, some children who seek orthodontic treatment in their younger years may need treatment again once all their permanent teeth have come in, which is known as Phase II.

Keep in mind that needing subsequent treatment won't happen to all children who seek orthodontic treatment early.  If you Colorado Springs orthodontist Dr. Scott Suter has recommended that your child have Phase II orthodontic treatment, find out more about that entails.

  • What should my child expect with Phase II orthodontic treatment:  Once all of your child's permanent teeth erupt, we will better be able to see if they will need a second round of treatment.  Many patients will need Phase II orthodontics.
  • How long does Phase II orthodontic treatment take?  The type and length of treatment will depend on the type and severity of the malocclusion.  Phase I treatment usually take anywhere from 6-12 months when children are between the ages of 7 to 10.  However, once the permanent teeth have come in (this takes anywhere from 1-2 years), we can begin Phase II treatment.  The second course of orthodontic treatment can generally take anywhere from 12-30 months.

Whether you or your child is interested in getting braces early or if you have noticed changes in your child's smile since all their permanent teeth have come in, it's never a bad time to schedule a consultation with your Colorado Springs orthodontist. Dr. Scott Suter is here to ensure that your child's smile is always healthy.
